Bring His Sacred Heart Home

Holy Spirit invites parishioners to place Christ at the center of their homes and families through the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart, welcoming Jesus’ love, mercy, and lordship in a visible and lasting way. 

The following instructions and resources are provided to guide you through the ceremony and support you in living out this devotion in your daily life. 

Bring a Sacred Heart of Jesus image to any Mass on June 28 to be blessed by Fr. Justin and enthroned in your home.

The Enthronement Ceremony begins at a table on which are placed the image of the Sacred Heart, a nine-day candle, and the family Bible or another significant family prayer book. 

Leader: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. 

R/. Amen. 

“In the Sacred Heart, the believer encounters the symbol and the living image of the infinite love of Christ, which in itself spurs us to love one another; he cannot fail to recognize the need to participate personally in the work of salvation. For this reason, every member of the Church is invited to see consecration as the giving and binding of oneself to Jesus Christ, the King "of prodigal sons", the King of all who are waiting to be led "into the light of God and of his kingdom". Consecration thus understood is to be joined to the missionary activity of the Church herself, because it answers the desire of Jesus' Heart to propagate in the world, through the members of his Body, his total dedication to the kingdom, and to unite the Church ever more closely to his offering to the Father and his being for others.”

The novena candle is then lit. 

Reader: A reading from the First Letter of John: Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love. In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him. In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another. No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfection in us. This is how we know that we remain in him and he in us, that he has given us of his Spirit. Moreover, we have seen and testify that the Father sent his Son as savior of the world. Whoever acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him and he in God. We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us. God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him. The Word of the Lord.

A parent or head of household carries the image of the Sacred Heart in procession to the place in which it will be hung/displayed, accompanied by other members of the household carrying the candle and family bible. Once the image of the Sacred Heart is in place, then all say: 

May Jesus be enthroned as King in our hearts and Friend of our family, now and forever. Amen.

Then the candle and family bible are placed near the image of the Sacred Heart. 

All: O Sacred Heart of Jesus, who made known your great desire to reign over Christian households, we are gathered now to proclaim your rule over our family. We promise to lead a Christ-like life; we will strive to live out all the virtues which will bring with them the peace that you promised. You will rule over our minds through our deep and living faith; You will be King of our hearts by our generous love for You, and we will cultivate this love by the reception of You in Holy Communion. Divine Heart of Jesus, preside over our family gatherings and bless all our undertakings. Sanctify our joys and comfort us in our sorrows. If any member of our family should offend you through sin, remind them, O Sacred Heart of Jesus, of your infinite love and mercy for us. Keep us all united in love as a family, both on this earth and in Your heavenly kingdom. As we offer you our Consecration, we give glory to your Divine Heart, O Jesus our King; to it be honor and glory forever. Amen. 

Leader: Having enthroned Jesus as the King of our hearts and friend of our home, let us entrust our prayers to his most loving heart: 

Reader: For Pope Leo and Archbishop McKnight, that they may continue to guide the Church in the way of truth and charity, let us pray to the Lord, 

All: Lord, hear our prayer. 

Reader: For the United States of America, as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our founding, may we be a nation that fosters the love of Christ and love of our neighbors, let us pray to the Lord,

All: Lord, hear our prayer. 

Reader: For the unity of Christians, that all who believe in the Risen Lord may find unity in His heart and carry His message of love to the world, let us pray to the Lord, 

All: Lord, hear our prayer. 

Reader: For our family that through this enthronement of the Sacred Heart we may renew our trust in Jesus and grow closer to Him daily, let us pray to the Lord, 

All: Lord, hear our prayer. 

Reader: For the sick and suffering, that they may find comfort, strength, and healing in the wounds of Christ, and trust in his mercy, let us pray to the Lord, 

All: Lord, hear our prayer. 

Reader: For our beloved dead that they may be welcomed into the everlasting peace and joy of Jesus Christ, let us pray to the Lord, 

All: Lord, hear our prayer. 

Leader: At the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say, 

All: Our Father… 

Leader: Let us pray. O Father of mercies and God of all consolation, Who by the exceeding love with which you have loved us, have given us the Heart of your beloved Son so that having but one heart with Him, we may love you perfectly, grant, we beseech you, that our hearts, being consumed in unity with the Heart of Jesus and with one another, may perform all our works in accord with his humility and charity and that, by his mediation, the just desires of our hearts may be accomplished, through the same Christ Our Lord.
